Complete interior renovation and building systems update of a 1975 free-standing bank branch on a major intersection in Castro Valley. We embraced on the project with the conviction that a bank must convey a sense of permanence and stability while projecting an interest in looking forward. Through the insertion of fluid curvilinear elements within the existing octagonal shell, the proposed design reinforces the building radial geometry while defying its formal implications. Increasing degrees of privacy were achieved through playful variation of wall heights and materiality; as well as different levels of light, translucency, and enclosure. We completed the construction in 16 weeks, working exclusively on evenings and weekends, in order to ensure the bank would stay fully operational throughout the rehabilitation process.
